Electromyography (EMG) & Nerve Testing

Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) are tests conducted within the offices of Parkview Orthopaedic Group, at both our Palos Heights and Mokena locations. These tests are often done in conjunction with one another to evaluate for nerve and muscle disorders. As the name suggests, Nerve Conduction Velocity detects problems with a nerve, while an EMG determines whether the muscle is properly functioning in response to the nerves.

Your physician may order an EMG/NCV if you are experiencing symptoms that could indicate a nerve or muscle disorder, such as tingling, numbness, muscle weakness and muscle pain. A few common conditions that these tests may evaluate for include carpal tunnel syndrome, herniated disc disease, sciatic nerve problems, and more.

At Parkview, Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Velocity are performed by Dr. Russell H. Glantz, who is a board-certified Neurologist. This type of testing takes approximately 45 minutes. Before beginning the procedure, Dr. Glantz will explain to you what to expect. Please be sure to ask him any questions you have.

For the EMG, thin, sterilized needles, called electrodes, are placed into specific muscle groups. These electrodes pick up electrical activity in the nerves that control your muscles, called motor neurons, and then translate those electrical signals into graphs and numerical values that can be interpreted by Dr. Glantz.

For the Nerve Conduction Velocity, surface electrodes are attached to your skin above the nerves that the doctor is evaluating. One electrode patch gives off a mild electrical impulse that stimulates your nerve, and a second electrode patch records the resulting electrical activity. A calculation is made between the distance and time it takes for the electrical impulses to travel, and Dr. Glantz can interpret that result to determine how the nerves are functioning.

Although some parts of these tests can be uncomfortable, Dr. Glantz and his assistants take great care to ensure that this is minimized. Furthermore, there are no lingering effects after the tests have been completed.

After the procedure, Dr. Glantz will interpret the results of the exam and prepare a report for your referring doctor. You must make an appointment with him or her to discuss the findings.

To schedule an EMG/NCV with Dr. Glantz, please contact his secretary, Lyn, during regular business hours at 708-923-2568.
